fjmt (in association with Hassell) was commissioned to design the new teaching and performance space for the internationally recognised Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University.

The 60-metre long studio building is characterised by a series of continuous horizontal louvres and provides a brick paved performance terrace facing the courtyard for functions and informal student performances. A series of double-height studios for music theatre, drama, dance and a showing studio are located on ground level, while recording, lighting and electronic studios are situated beneath in isolated structures.

The first floor houses costume and millinery workshops, design studios, a technical drawing studio and offices. The adjacent performing arts theatre is set over three levels as an intimate, court-style theatre seating 190 people. Accommodating multiple uses including drama, dance, and music, the theatre has a dual role as a teaching resource and as a venue for performance.
