This top floor apartment looks across the top of sandstone cliffs to the continuous horizon of the ocean. The grandeur and sublime nature of this outlook demanded a space that could respond to the long horizontal and blue of water meeting sky, whilst offering a warm refuge, sheltering and homelike protection from the wind and vastness outside.

A series of existing rooms (living, dining, kitchen, bedroom) are combined into a single, continuous space capturing the broad horizon, light and view. This single space for living is lined with timber, fabric and artwork to create a warm, soft interior.

Space is formed through three timber volumes that subtly push into the free space, making and defining connected areas for activity. Timber volumes provide frames for artwork, recesses for the kitchen and position for the fireplace.

The sun and view penetrate deeply into this timber shelter being mediated through screens of timber and muslin fabric.
