The practice was engaged to design this landmark project following an invited design competition. The Scientia is the symbolic heart of the campus and embodies the progressive spirit of the University. It was conceptually developed as a gravitational centre, a place of spontaneous gathering and a ceremonial focus for the university and wider community, and rapidly became the symbol of UNSW.
This sustainable multi-purpose venue comprises a sequence of public and performance spaces including a flexible flat-floor ceremonial hall, exhibition space, theatre and cinema, multi-function venue space, a music auditorium, foyer and bar, and four seminar rooms.
The Scientia was awarded Australia’s highest architectural and construction honours including the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Buildings, the Lloyd Rees Award for Civic Design, the Sir John Sulman Medallion for Architecture and the National New Commercial Building Award for Construction Excellence.
